The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) 2007 are in place to ensure that businesses are responsible for the recovery and recycling of packaging waste in the UK.
If your business produces or handles more than 50 tonnes of packaging in a year and has a turnover of more than £2million you will need to comply with the regulations. This means that you are required to meet annual recycling targets that are related to the packaging type and weight for which your business is responsible.
The regulations place obligations on businesses to:
- Register with the Environment Agency (either directly or through a compliance scheme).
- Recover and recycle specific tonnages of packaging waste each year.
- Certify that this has been done.
These obligations relate to the total amount of packaging that your business handles, not the amount of packaging waste you produce.
Compliance schemes such as ours will take on your legal liabilities and carry out your recovery and recycling obligations for you. Our team are on hand to help members apply the waste regulations to their company packaging, ensure the data compilation process is as efficient and accurate as possible, assist in calculating member’s packaging obligations and ultimately submit data.
Members of the Clarity packaging compliance scheme can take full advantage of our expertise and guidance at every stage of the packaging regulations process.
